CongressesCongresses
EI-BSS was set up as a result of the 1st Basque Studies Congress, held in Oñati (Gipuzkoa) in 1918. Since then, Basque Studies Congresses have had a vertebrating role in the life of the Basque Studies Society, while at the same time constituting one of the Society’s greatest contributions to Basque cultural and scientific progress.

Six Congresses were held up to Civil War, most on monographic themes. During the four decades of prohibition of activities in peninsular Vasconia, another two such Congresses were held in Bayonne and Biarritz. Finally, as from 1983 these Congresses are held regularly and in them the challenges faced by Basque society as a whole are analysed in a multidisciplinary manner.
