This collection was initiated by Eusko Ikaskuntza -Basque studies Society in 1984. Its objective is the publication of the so-called Basque Studies Society-Eusko Ikaskuntza: José Miguel de Barandiarán Research Scholarship, set up by Eusko Ikaskuntza - Basque Studies Society, in 1980, in collaboration with the Statutory Diputations Forales of Alava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Navarre.

The scholarship is dedicated to works related with prehistory-archaeology and anthropology-ethnography in the Basque Country. In 1988 Eusko Ikaskuntza-Basque Studies Society contributed the scholarship as foundational patrimony to the José Miguel de Barandiarán Foundation.
